I found this scene in Dayton, NV in the fall and changed it up a lot for this painting. The cabin here is some weird irrigation building in real life. I’m so glad I paint so I can occasionally escape real life! I imagined some old moonshiner holed up in his secret hideaway, waiting for the moonlit night...

I pass this scene several times a week, but this day the light was what I have hoped for.  Wanted to give the impression of how the mountains do really rise up like this in the Carson Valley of Nevada.

"Long Cold Winter"

We just had a glorious snowstorm here out west - here's a view I saw on my way home the other day.  The scene reference is actually a graveyard I pulled into - forgive me for not rendering it as such!

I've had a reference photo of my brother's craftsman home for about five years, and I've talked myself out of painting it a number of times - "How will I represent that part?"  "How do I reconcile this with that?"   I finally dispensed with the analysis paralysis and went for it.   The VW bus is integral to the story - before it's refurbishment, my late father had a nickname for it.  "Rust".   This is such a California scene - hopefully you can groove on it - even if it's just an old house and an old VW!

My view of Hope Valley - just south of Lake Tahoe, and the historic path of gold field bound emigrants headed towards the mother lode during the California gold rush.  If you know where to look, there are remnants of the old trail, and a couple of instances of emigrants signing their names in wagon axle grease on the rocks.  They are still faintly readable.  I love this area, and its only about an hour from home.

I saw this scene on the California coast at Pacifica nine years ago.  I painted a small study of it eight years ago, and just yesterday completed an adequately sized piece.  I guess I wasn't in a rush!

Nevada - we're not just a desert!  The Carson Valley is in the shadow of the Sierra - lots of fertile farmland below Lake Tahoe.

I finally finished my latest painting that I sketched in a couple days ago.  This is the Nevada state line at the California border in Verdi...
