I finally finished my latest painting that I sketched in a couple days ago.  This is the Nevada state line at the California border in Verdi, NV.  The state line sign is in the scene and if I were a hyper-realist I would include it!  But I'm not...  😉

Just did this in about five hours today...  I remember hiking around on the east side of the lake photographing, and yelling down to the dudes in the boat if they wanted a unique image of their boat. I couldn’t get them interested LOL! Oh well, so I’ll paint the scene.  I don't know if the tribe allows you out there anymore.

A scene I saw from my last visit to the Grand Canyon.   It's the most breathtaking sight in the world, but I feel unless you have some foreground interest, its hard to make a painting of it.  I want to go back!  For art nerds, interesting fun fact - this is the very first painting I pulled off using a glass pallette.   Cleanup is a breeze!  I also just took an online course by Matt Smith, and this is the first painting after that.

A scene in Washoe Valley between Reno and Carson City, Nevada. In winter the fields dry up to a wonderful gold.

A small painting - a remembrance of our one and only trip to Hawaii. Must go there again sometime - post-mask world!

Another piece from my little hike the other day in the Virginia City, NV hills. We locals take for granted these vistas - I guess being a painter makes one re-appreciate! Is that correct grammar?  😄

I took a hike in the hills below Virginia City, Nevada yesterday and was taken by these stately pinion pines - they grow in harsh conditions and grow to a ripe old age - unless some cuts them down for a Christmas Tree.

I found this scene in Dayton, NV in the fall and changed it up a lot for this painting. The cabin here is some weird irrigation building in real life. I’m so glad I paint so I can occasionally escape real life! I imagined some old moonshiner holed up in his secret hideaway, waiting for the moonlit night...

I pass this scene several times a week, but this day the light was what I have hoped for.  Wanted to give the impression of how the mountains do really rise up like this in the Carson Valley of Nevada.

"Long Cold Winter"
6x6 - oil on wood panel

We just had a glorious snowstorm here out west - here's a view I saw on my way home the other day.  The scene reference is actually a graveyard I pulled into - forgive me for not rendering it as such!

I've had a reference photo of my brother's craftsman home for about five years, and I've talked myself out of painting it a number of times - "How will I represent that part?"  "How do I reconcile this with that?"   I finally dispensed with the analysis paralysis and went for it.   The VW bus is integral to the story - before it's refurbishment, my late father had a nickname for it.  "Rust".   This is such a California scene - hopefully you can groove on it - even if it's just an old house and an old VW!

My view of Hope Valley - just south of Lake Tahoe, and the historic path of gold field bound emigrants headed towards the mother lode during the California gold rush.  If you know where to look, there are remnants of the old trail, and a couple of instances of emigrants signing their names in wagon axle grease on the rocks.  They are still faintly readable.  I love this area, and its only about an hour from home.

I saw this scene on the California coast at Pacifica nine years ago.  I painted a small study of it eight years ago, and just yesterday completed an adequately sized piece.  I guess I wasn't in a rush!

Nevada - we're not just a desert!  The Carson Valley is in the shadow of the Sierra - lots of fertile farmland below Lake Tahoe.

Brand new - started last night, finishing touches today...  found this scene near Dayton, NV - famous for being the location of the last film by Marilyn Monroe and Clark Gable - “The Misfits “. But I digress - fantastic desert scenery here! Trying here to catch the feel of the setting sun on the landscape.

A favorite scene from my hometown in So Cal - I like the way the road winds through the orange groves and eucalyptus trees. I even saw a California Condor gliding around while I was there!

I've been meaning to recreate this scene for some time - finally figured out how to integrate the barn to my liking!  This area is in the Holcomb Lane area in south Reno.  8x10 - oil on wood panel.

landscape oil painting by Steve Ellison - artist in Reno, Nevada

The Gardnerville/Minden area of Nevada is becoming popular with California expats - and the home prices are starting to reflect it. The eastern Sierra takes on a special majesty here when snow-covered. 6x6" - oil on masonite. #oilpainting #landscapepainting #gardnerville #minden #carsonvalley #reno #nevada #art #artist #homedecor

landscape oil painting by Steve Ellison - artist in Reno, Nevada
Spring in Nevada - it is coming again soon, but we must have patience!  I painted this this past spring of a scene near Gardnerville, NV - there are fantastic farm scenes here, with the Sierra as a backdrop!  This scene caught my eye partly due to the little irrigation ditch which is a great leading line into the painting.

Alaskan Fireweed - home and office decor photography

landscape photography by Steve Ellison - photographer in Reno, Nevada
This is a photograph I created up in Alaska several years ago.  The fireweed was blooming in full effect that summer, and I found this scene just off the road on the way to Homer.   As I recall I believe I climbed on top of our rented RV to get this vantage point.  That's a dormant volcano in the background.  One of my faves!
